A typical bacteriophage, such as the well studied T-even phages, has an icosahedral (polyhedral) head or capsid that encloses its genetic material, connected to a tail structure made up of a tail sheath and a central tail core. At the base of the tail lies a base plate with attached tail fibers, which recognize and bind to specific receptor sites on the surface of a susceptible bacterial cell. After attachment, the phage injects its genetic material into the host bacterium, initiating the infection cycle, which can proceed either as a lytic cycle that rapidly produces new phage particles and destroys the host cell, or, in temperate phages, as a lysogenic cycle in which the phage genome integrates with the host chromosome.
