Construction & Design
The Minimum Maximum Thermometer is built as a U-shaped parallel glass tube with two bulbs filled with alcohol or oil at the top, and mercury in the bend at the bottom. As the alcohol or oil in the bulbs expands or contracts with thermal changes, it drives the mercury up and down the two parallel scales. One side of the tube registers the minimum temperature reached, while the other registers the maximum, since the instrument's last reading. A celluloid graduated magnet index is used to mark and hold each reading in place.
