The Life Cycle of Scabies Model by Jaincolab is a biology teaching model depicting the developmental cycle of the scabies mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, which lives and reproduces entirely within human skin. Unlike many parasites that require an intermediate host, the entire life cycle of the scabies mite takes place on and within the skin of its human host. The fertilized adult female burrows into the outer layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, where she lays eggs as she tunnels. These eggs hatch into six-legged larvae, which move to the skin surface and molt into eight-legged protonymphs and then tritonymphs before becoming adult males or females. Mating occurs on the skin surface, after which the fertilized female burrows in again to lay eggs, continuing the cycle. Scabies spreads primarily through prolonged direct skin-to-skin contact.
