Millikan's apparatus, without inbuilt power sources, permits the atomizing of a latex solution into small spheres and the rubber hose induces a static charge upon them.
Their movement is viewed through a small telescope with a graticule.
Power sources are required to be connected.
Knowing the potential on the cell plates and plotting the velocities of the spheres permits the calculation of the charge on a single electron.
They are introduced between charged plates in the form of a cell.
As the voltage between these cell plates is reversed, the particles are attracted to one plate or the other.
Description:-
A switch is provided to reverse the voltage polarity on the cell.
The red socket is positive when the switch is in the ‘forward’ direction.
Sockets are provided for a student bench meter or multimeter to monitor the cell voltage.
Sockets are provided for connecting to 12V.AC or DC at 3A for the illuminator.
Sockets are provided for connecting a high voltage DC power supply to provide approx.300V.DC. to the cell plates.
This voltage does not reverse with the reversing switch.
A knob is provided to adjust the cell voltage from zero to about 300V.DC. during an experiment.
