Wilsons Cloud Chamber
Product Code : JA-APE-9390
The Wilsons Cloud Chamber (SKU JA-APE-9390) is an expansion cloud chamber for making the tracks of ionising radiation visible in school and college atomic physics lessons. This Wilson cloud chamber with vacuum pump has its chamber fitted to a base assembly by three clamping screws, a point source rod that screws into a storage hole in the edge of the base, and a vacuum pump, a modified bicycle pump with the hose fitted into the handle, used to expand the air in the chamber so that tracks form.
Specifications
The chamber is supplied with its base assembly, a 12 mm base support rod with knurled-head attachment screw, point source rod, vacuum pump, puffer bottle and hose, small squeeze bottle and filter disc for radioactive material, support rod for lamp illumination, flexible tubing and a Mohr clip.

Experiments with the Wilson cloud chamber
In the chamber, a sudden expansion cools the air so that vapour condenses along the paths of charged particles from a source, giving visible tracks that students can observe and compare.
- Observing the tracks of alpha particles from a point source
- Comparing track length and density for different radiations
- Demonstrating the ionisation of air by radiation
- Introducing particle detection in nuclear physics lessons
