Mass of Electron Apparatus
Product Code : JA-APE-9404
The Mass of Electron Apparatus (SKU JA-APE-9404) is a Magic Eye vacuum tube mounted on a base with terminals for heater and plate voltages, used to determine the charge-to-mass ratio of the electron and so estimate its mass. In this e/m apparatus with a magic eye tube, a fan of electrons spreading over the anode is seen through the end of the tube; when an air-cored solenoid placed over the tube carries a current, its field curves the fan, and measuring that curvature allows the approximate mass of an electron to be calculated.

Experiments with the mass of electron apparatus
The apparatus gives a direct view of electrons bending in a magnetic field, so students can link the curvature of the beam to the solenoid current and the plate voltage and calculate e/m.
- Determining the charge-to-mass ratio (e/m) of the electron
- Calculating the approximate mass of the electron
- Observing the deflection of electrons by the magnetic field of a solenoid
- Relating beam curvature to solenoid current
Scope of supply
The listing covers the Magic Eye tube mounted on its base with heater and plate terminals. The air-cored solenoid, power supplies, meters, spares and quantities are confirmed on the quotation.

Frequently asked questions
What does the mass of electron apparatus measure?
It is used to determine the ratio of the charge to the mass of an electron, from which the approximate mass of an electron can be calculated.
How is the electron beam seen?
A fan of electrons on the anode of the Magic Eye tube is viewed through the end of the tube.
What produces the deflecting field?
An air-cored solenoid placed over the tube, with a current passed through it; the field at its centre curves the electron fan.
What should a quotation request include?
Send the SKU JA-APE-9404, the quantity, whether the solenoid and power supplies are needed and the delivery destination.
